DISEC
About the committee
The Disarmament and International Security Committee (DISEC) was first created in the United Nations Charter, under Chapter IV, with intentions of advocating, debating, and solving matters of international disarmament and security. DISEC is also known as the First Committee in the United Nations General Assembly. The committee consists of 193 member states and it is the only main committee of the General Assembly entitled to verbatim records. The committee considers all disarmament and international security matters within the scope of the charter or relating to the powers and functions of any other organ of the United Nations; the general principles of cooperation in the maintenance of international peace and security, as well as principles governing disarmament and the regulation of armaments; promotion of cooperative arrangements and measures aimed at strengthening stability through lower levels of armaments.
Agenda Item
The Militarization of Space

The militarization of space is about the development and placement of weapons and military technology in space. The militarization of space has become a growing and serious issue on the world agenda. As new technologies enable space applications, countries are beginning to see space as a battlefield like sea, air and land. Space weapons consist of weapons that can attack orbiting space systems (i.e. anti-satellite weapons), hit targets on Earth from space, or disable missiles traveling in space. Today, the goal of countries to go their own way into space is seen as a strategic move in which countries demonstrate their superiority over each other. As national security is related to space, it challenges the perception of time, distance and geography. Since organizations such as the United Nations have been unable to regulate and develop existing legal agreements in the face of this serious issue, no new regulation has been made in this field. Delegates in this committee will negotiate to prevent the uncontrolled militarization of space and try to find solutions that will maintain peace and neutrality.
